September can feel like a sprint. On the long days, remember this: your work is moving the needle for kids and families—right now. This month, I’m inviting every leader to “Keep the Wins.” Create a simple “Wins Folder” in your PTA's Google Drive. Drop in thank-you notes, quick emails from parents, photos from events, and little moments that made you smile. When the calendar is packed and energy dips, flip through it. It’s proof that what you do matters.
Take two minutes before each meeting to reread your mission and the reason you said “yes.” Then look for it in action at your events—families connecting, teachers supported, students thriving. That perspective shift fuels momentum.
Leadership isn’t solo work. Pair up with one or two trusted PTA friends for quick pep talks, reality checks, and shared ideas. You’ll move faster (and further) together.

Minutes Matter: Notes from Jenny Jackson, Council Secretary
I hope your school year is off to a great start! I am Jenny Jackson, your Secretary contact on the Plano Council of PTAs. The Council board's main goal is for you and your PTA to be successful and I am here to help you do that!
Many of you have probably already had your first meeting or it is coming up soon. To help you get started on the right path, I have a checklist:
Register yourself as an officer with TX PTA and please encourage all of your fellow Board members to do this as well. This is where Council gets the information to create their distribution lists.
Complete the Foundations Essentials training video once in your PTA career, and then this year, complete the BASICS Secretary training video
Review the TX PTA Financial Reconciliation Checklist. Especially page 3. (Committee Member #2) I think this is a good way for you to get an idea of what you need to have in your bound books for the reconciliation at the end of the fiscal year.
Complete a Plan of Work (POW)- Coordinate with the Treasurer for what information they want on the POW.
Request a copy of your bylaws on or after August 1, 2026 to get the newest version of your bylaws and standing rules. The very last sentence of Article XIV should include the date August 1, 2026. If it doesn't, you do not have the most recent template. It is important that you are always working with the most recent version. Many questions can often be answered by reviewing your Bylaws and Standing Rules.
Coordinate with the President to decide how you want to have the minutes for each meeting reviewed. 3 options:
Secretary reads the minutes at the next meeting and then has them approved by those present.
Secretary distributes the minutes via email prior to the next meeting and then have the minutes approved at the meeting by those present
At each meeting, President appoints a Minutes Review Committee of 3 people to review the current minutes prior to the next meeting
Learn what your PTA’s quorum is for each type of meeting- Board or Membership. This information is specified in your Bylaws.

Teams from across Plano ISD are working together in the fight against hunger by participating in the 2026 Virtual North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) Peanut Butter Drive. The drive runs throughout the month of September, in conjunction with Hunger Action Month. Our goal is to come together as a community to help feed hungry children and families and raise awareness about food insecurity in North Texas.

Plano ISD's District Leaders returned for the new year making it their mission to visit Plano ISD school campuses on Mondays to see all the great learning in action!
They kicked things off on Monday, August 17, at Haggard Middle School's weekly planning meeting.
Monday, August 24 they began the week with classroom visits during math and reading time at Memorial Elementary School.
This week Monday, August 31, their visit at Mendenhall Elementary School showed incredible teaching, creative strategies, engaged students and classrooms full of energy.
In Plano ISD we believe a strong accountability system is essential to ensuring every student is prepared for college, career and life. We value clear metrics of success that measure both achievement and growth, and we are committed to being transparent with our community about our progress. Throughout the year, we share multiple progress reports with our Board of Trustees and families to help our community understand both our successes and opportunities for growth.
While the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) is the state’s primary measure for school accountability, our district also uses the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment because of its validity, reliability, and ability to provide actionable information throughout the school year. MAP is a computer-adaptive test, aligned to STAAR, and nationally normed—meaning it measures student performance against peers across the country. Administered multiple times a year from kindergarten through eighth grade, MAP helps us track progress, adjust instruction, and ensure students are on the right path toward college and career readiness. Plano ISD also relies on PSAT, SAT and Advanced Placement exams to monitor our students’ performance against national standards.
Plano ISD continues to consistently outperform both the state and our region not only on the state’s STAAR exams but also on national metrics. At the same time, we recognize that a single test on a single day cannot capture the full scope of a student’s abilities or the depth of the work of our teachers and students. That’s why we rely on multiple measures to define success and remain steadfast in our belief that our students are more than a score.
This linked presentation was presented at the August 18, 2026 Work Session. The presentation provided the Board with the district's 2025-2026 Accountability Rating from the Texas Education Agency, along with the underlying data that shaped it: STAAR performance by content area, PSAT and SAT results, AP outcomes, and College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) indicators. The presentation also connects these results to the district's Strategic Plan accountability metrics and reviews the District Support Team and campus-level differentiated accountability groups for 2026-2027.
We are proud of our many examples of unmatched achievement from academic competitions to career certifications to fine arts excellence. We remain keenly focused on continuous improvement. Our commitment is to ensure that every student, in every school, experiences growth, reaches high levels of achievement and leaves Plano ISD fully prepared for their future.

The Education Foundation knows most teachers spend their own money on supplies to help their students. The CORE Store offers teachers a range of school supplies that are appropriate for all grade levels. Selection is based on generous community donations. Thanks to the wonderful donations made by our community and various partnerships, the Education Foundation is able to provide essential supplies for our educators to help every student achieve their potential.
Volunteer opportunities are available weekly at the CORE Store. Some of the tasks include conducting inventory, bundling school supplies and checking out teachers once they've completed shopping. Plano ISD participates in the federal meal program, which provides free and reduced-price meals to students who qualify. Families who may qualify for meal benefits should complete a meal application for the 2025-26 school year, available through our website.
Families who already have a SchoolCafé account can sign in to complete the meal application. Families who do not have an account can create a new one by selecting that option on the SchoolCafé page. View this SchoolCafé information video for instructions on how to complete the meal application.
Applications will be processed within 10 business days. Eligibility notification letters will be sent via email. If you have not received the letter in your inbox, please check your junk and spam folders.
Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. The linked information will help you learn about options for, as well as how to talk to your child and others about, the safe storage of firearms.
It is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence:
Failed to secure the firearm; or
Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access
The penalty for allowing a child access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two).
Remember, a gun should be stored unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored elsewhere. You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety website.

All officers must register with Texas PTA. Use the “President-Elect” option only if your PTA follows the President-Elect board structure. Register here.
Complete Required Training:Texas PTA requires all Board members to complete two training requirements. FOUNDATIONS Essentials and Basics can be completed online and should be taken within 30 days of election or appointment. Complete training.
Review Bylaws and Standing Rules:Take time to review your PTA’s bylaws and standing rules to understand the structure and expectations of your role.
Meet with Your Predecessor:Schedule a meeting with the outgoing officer to learn more about the position and plan the transfer of materials at the end of the fiscal year.
Develop a Plan of Work:Draft a plan of work for your role and submit it to the executive board for approval at an upcoming meeting.

2026-2027 Texas PTA Legislative Priority Survey - September 9 Deadline
One of the many benefits of being a PTA member is having a voice in shaping Texas PTA's work during the 90th Texas Legislature.
Not everyone can travel to Austin to testify during the legislative session, but every member can help shape the issues Texas PTA brings forward. By taking 15 minutes to complete the Texas PTA Advocacy Survey, members can tell Texas PTA what they are seeing and experiencing in their homes, schools, and local communities.
You do not need to be an expert on laws or government to participate. Hearing from members with different backgrounds and experiences helps Texas PTA truly understand the needs of local communities.

September 15 – Texas PTA Senior & Staff Scholarship Applications Open
Texas PTA’s annual scholarship program opens on September 15, 2026! This program provides:
Senior Scholarships – $1,000 awards for graduating high school seniors who are college or technical school bound. Applicants must be members of a PTA/PTSA that is active by December 1.
Faculty/Staff Scholarships – Up to $500 awards for Texas educators and staff working at schools with an active PTA/PTSA.
Key Dates:

Applications close: November 15, 2026
PTA membership required by: December 1, 2026
Recipients announced: April 1, 2027
These scholarships not only provide financial support but also recognize leadership, community engagement, and academic success.
National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday that celebrates our democracy and encourages every eligible citizen to make their voice heard. For PTA, this day is a powerful reminder of our advocacy roots. From the very beginning, PTA has worked to amplify the voices of families and ensure that laws and policies reflect what’s best for children.
