December 16, 2018

Since the PISD PTA legislative priorities were approved on November 27, members of the PISD Council of PTAs met with our local legislators to share the priorities and advocate for children in our community. Good news! All of our legislators said that public education will be a high priority in the 86th legislative session. Many education related bills have already been filed, and this is where to find a bill list related to PISD PTA legislative priorities.

The Texas Commission on Public School Finance released a final report draft this week. The recommendations include an overall increase in school funding, establishing merit-based teacher salaries, changing allotments and weights, and reducing recapture growth.

The State Board of Education released its 2019 Legislative Priorities. These include specific requests for funding, family support initiatives, teacher compensation, and more. Find the complete list HERE.

Do you want to advocate for children at the national level? The National PTA will host a Legislative Conference from March 12-14 in Arlington, VA. Here is information about the schedule, hotel, and more. There is a $30 early bird discount if you register by December 18.

In case you missed the Rally Day webinar about Policy Issues, you are welcome to view the recording. The next webinar about meeting with legislators will be on January 10.

Social emotional learning is one component of PISD PTA's legislative priorities. A Community Impact article posted this week describes how PISD is expanding its SEL in the district, with strong support from the superintendent.

Everyone is invited to attend the next Plano ISD Council of PTAs delegate meeting on Tuesday, January 15, at 10:00 at the PISD Administration Building Boardroom, 2700 W 15th St.
